County Senior Hurling

League Final

Date: Tuesday 4th September 2012

Venue: Mick Neville Park

Kilmallock   4-19   Ballybrown 4-9

Heartiest congratulations to Kilmallock on winning the 2012 All County Senior Hurling League and doing so with some style.

There were numerous changes to the team prior to the match as Bryan O’Sullivan and Liam Hurley were unavailable due to injury and the selectors were in experimental mood with the team selection.

These didn’t seem have any great effect on the team as the lads started  the game in very positive fashion.

Barry Hennessey was soundness personified in goal and our backs, particularly Philip O’Loughlin, Robbie Egan and Aaron Costello, were very much in control and together with our centre field pairing of Gavin O’Mahony and Paudie O’Brien our very lively forwards received a plentiful supply of good ball which they used to telling effect.

Paudie Dwyer, Jake Mulcahy and Graeme Mulcahy were causing havoc in the Ballybrown back line  and if our shooting had been a little more accurate from play and from frees we would surely have been further ahead at the interval. The half time score read: Kilmallock 2-9 Ballybrown 0-6.

Kilmallock began the second half minus the services of Gavin O’Mahony,  who was injured. Shane O’Donnell was introduced and Gavin’s absence didn’t seem to matter as within ten minutes of the restart we were 4-11 to 0-6 ahead thanks mainly to two superb goals from Graeme Mulcahy. Things got worse for Ballybrown as one of their backs received his marching orders following a nasty foul on Graeme.

Following this incident the management team made wholesale changes bringing on John Kelly, Eamonn Maguire, John Meade  and Derek O’Mahony.  Kevin O’Donnell took over the free taking duties with instant success and all seemed to be going quite well.

Unfortunately Kilmallock  seemed to take the foot off the pedal and Ballybrown made them pay the price scoring a total of four goals. The one good thing was that each time Ballybrown scored the lads responded  immediately with a number of points.

So well done to all concerned on an excellent victory. We had a number of injuries during the game and here’s hoping that these will be cleared up in time for the county semi-final.
