There are no words to describe the shock that hit us when word filtered through, on Wednesday morning April 1st, that Gerard Joseph Houlihan passed away suddenly during the night. The people of Kilmallock and our friends all over Limerick were stunned.
Ger was only in his late forties being born in 1971. He was always a very easy going person and always in good humour.
Ger was born on The Green Road, Kilmallock – the youngest in a family of five who are great GAA people. His late father Gerard played Junior and Senior Hurling for Kilmallock and his late mother Joan was a member of the Quaid family from Ballingarry, also wonderful GAA people. Both parents passed on their great passion for hurling and football to all their children.
Ger played in every grade of both hurling and football for his Club. He, like all the Houlihans, was blessed with great strength and determination and he gave it everything. If you were on the team with Ger Joseph you always knew that he had your back and if you ever played against him you also knew that you were in a game.
In the true spirit of hurling he was hard but fair.
Ger was on the Junior B teams that won County Hurling Titles in 1993 and 1996. He also won a South Under 21 Hurling Title in 1991. Having played with Kilmallock Seniors on many occasions he supported all Kilmallock and Limerick teams all his life and with us he celebrated Limericks All Ireland Victory in 2018. We in the Club will always remember you as a very special person Ger. We will miss your easy going way, your mischievous banter and your quiet demeanor.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Ger’s wife Louise, to his children Kate, James, Ava and Olivia; to his brothers John and Michael and his sisters Geraldine and Catheriona; to his parents-in-law James and Catherine O’Donnell; to his extended family and to his many, many friends.
There are no words that will make this easier for Ger’s family at this harrowing time but you are in the thoughts of everyone in Kilmallock GAA club and the wider GAA circle.
