Tony Smith – R.I.P.

Tony Smith – R.I.P.

We in Kilmallock G.A.A. Club were very sad to hear, over the past few days, of the passing of Tony Smith. We are thinking of his wife Helen and their family on this sad occasion. Our Club will never forget Tony and whenever hurling is discussed in Kilmallock the name Smithy will be mentioned. We first got to know him in the late 70’s when he played against us with St. Mary’s of London. Since that time he was always known as Smithy in Kilmallock and what a fantastic player he was. Tony hurled with us in ’73 and ’74, the contribution he made was immense, he was a scoring machine and he played a major part in the winning of those Championships. What a player he was! Tony was very sporting, a gentleman on and off the field, he was also our leading entertainer after the matches, definitely a one off. Tony’s health was not great for a long time but he never lost heart or humour, a fighter to the end. Sadly Tony has departed this world and while he was here the world was definitely a better place.

Tony Smith was a true sportsman, an exceptional hurler… and a great friend.

Smithy may your soul rest in peace.
